Story Behind the Song

One warm summer day I got a call from my best friend. He was living in Spain for a season, to renew and redirect. The call was a surprise, and the information troubling. I feared for his weariness and isolation. So I began writing what he might need to hear.

I brought the song to my producer Nate. He asked, “Have you seen the movie ‘Cold Mountain’?” which I had not. “Do so, then let’s finish your song.” The movie is a classic tale of warn-torn lovers: the brave hero fighting to get back to his beloved, promising his return and asking for faithfulness.

It’s been said that ‘hope deferred makes the heart sick’. Yet I have seen Love go to great lengths to rescue a heart, and renew hope.

So to those who wait, and those who seek, hear the passion and promise of your hero…

Lyrics

Across the sea of lonely / and past the midnight sky
I’m thinking ‘bout you only / and wishing I could fly (to you)
A world at war between us / wind and waves and storms
I’m fighting for that moment / when I hold you in my arms

So I call to you across the sea

I will return (Light a watchfire in the night)
I will return (Guard the flame, keep hope alive)

Let the moon renew the promise / let the stars keep hope alive
I will cross the gulf between us / look to the midnight sky

I will fly to you across the sea / I will find a way, I’ll cross this sea

I will return (Fix your eyes on the eastern sky)
I will return (Love will return in the blink of an eye)

So I call to you across the sea / I can hear your heart call back to me
When the midnight tries to steal our dream / I will fly to you across the sea

I will return (Light a watchfire in the night / Guard the flame, keep hope alive)

I will return (Fix your eyes on the eastern sky / Love will return in the blink of an eye)
