Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, Africa is one of the world's poorest countries. Thankfully the 2006 movie "Blood Diamond" helped raise awareness.  Ravaged by civil war in the 90's, Sierra Leone is in slow recovery.  They have the highest infant mortality rate in the world according to the UN, with 1 out of 3 kids dying before the age of 5.  Amazingly, most of their sickness, disease and death are preventable, and linked to one major culprit: unsafe water.

The Mission 

Through our partnership with World Vision, a major world relief organization, we discovered Bo, a southern province of Sierra Leone.  Mission Bo has targeted approximately 44,000 people in 100 villages, and we are committed to those communities until they are self-sustaining. The starting point is water. Most residents are left with no choice but to consume contaminated water, which has a crippling effect on health and productivity.

Phase 1: Done!

In 2007, over $150,000 was raised and numerous children sponsored to kick off Mission Bo.  The work is underway, with the restoration and construction of wells to provide safe water, as well as critical training in well maintenance, water sanitization, disease prevention, and hygiene practices.

Phase 2 : Underway!

In 2008, we're expanding the critical establishment of safe water and latrines, along with needed development of health clinics.  And we have almost 200 kids sponsored!  Our efforts are directly impacting the mortality rate and quality of life in these communities.

Lessons Learned

What Africa is teaching me:

- Be a part of something bigger than yourself.  It's liberating.

- There is great need in America too.  The difference in third-world countries is there is great need without opportunity.

- Let your heart break with things that break the heart of God.  God deeply cares about the poor.  So should I.
